When will VB get multi-line comments?

'Hollywood Jack' on Fri, 25 Feb 2005 01:07:35 GMT, sez:

Doesn't need 'em because of that nifty button that comments or uncomments the selected text in a single click!

(See my Oscars website? Click my name.)

'sergio' on Fri, 25 Feb 2005 01:28:28 GMT, sez:

Wouldn't that be a compatibility breaking feature?

Suddenly all legacy code that happens to have a '* somewhere would stop working.

Unless of course they also added a new 'Option Extended Comments' compiler flag.

'Brett' on Fri, 25 Feb 2005 01:33:26 GMT, sez:

No, multiline comments should be turned on by default. So it would have to be Option No ExtendedComments. Then microsoft can go pattent the idea of negation in an option statement.

'secretGeek' on Fri, 25 Feb 2005 01:51:42 GMT, sez:

'Option Extended Comments' or MultiLineComments or something... yeh that would be the way to do it.... sergio's right, it would stop the change from breaking backward compatability, so long as it defaults to false.

the reason i'd like to see multi-line comments is so that they will look better for writing comments that document the design of your code.

having to pre-pend every line with a quote character is distracting and can even be misleading.

cheers

'Dominic Cronin' on Fri, 25 Feb 2005 06:48:22 GMT, sez:

#If Comment Then

This is a multiline comment
It spans lots of lines
Just like this

It's an existing feature - just the comment delimiters look a bit funny! The highlighting is exciting too.

Just make sure you never define Comment

#End If

'Leigh Kendall' on Sat, 26 Feb 2005 11:50:07 GMT, sez:

Hmm... how 'bout something similar to collapsible regions using a similar syntax. For example:

#Comment "Comment Title"
Anything in this block is a multi-line comment
See Ma, no hands!
#End Comment

'Nick Burns' on Mon, 28 Feb 2005 13:24:48 GMT, sez:

'This is _
a multiline comment _
that extends _
more than _
1 line. _
Any more _
than 10 _
lines _
and the line _
continuation fails miserably.

'Leachy' on Wed, 06 Apr 2005 18:48:43 GMT, sez:

Thats a good start mayby you could change that so you can read it better:

' _
Hello there i am _
wanting to have multiline comments _
can you help me? _
or are you just a fool?

That way you move '_ above so you can read better.nice idea nick

'wad' on Thu, 21 Apr 2005 18:10:21 GMT, sez:

That whole thing sucks - Move on to something that has multiline comments

'Shimmy' on Thu, 30 Apr 2009 13:34:33 GMT, sez:

'Oh that _
'breaklines sucks big time

best idea should be something like regions
maybe use the word REM from VB6 with another thing I posted a suggestion for Microsoft please come all in and vote!!!!

'Shimmy' on Thu, 30 Apr 2009 13:42:08 GMT, sez:

you can't use '*
because plenty of code is written with *' without a closing *'

there most be some keyword for it or some unused oprator operator like -- (this is SQL's single line comment)

or REM or
#Comment
which is too a long word already
#End Comment

'Pupsnudel' on Fri, 15 Oct 2010 09:29:13 GMT, sez:

What about just write the text with your line wraps and then <SHIFT>-<ARROW-UP> to mark your comment and then <CTRL>-<K>, <CTRL>-<C> for commenting it?

All viewpoints welcome. But the right to delete any post for any reason is reserved. Don't make me do it. Aim for constructiveness. Comments may be republished, emailed to your loved ones or printed and used as toilet paper. Also, I get particularly nasty on comment spam. It's not worth even trying to post comment spam here -- your html is escaped, and your links are given a rel='nofollow'. By attempting to post a comment, you understand that if the comment is considered spam, at my absolute discretion, your IP address may be used as the target of a prolonged distributed denial of service attack. Your electricity might suddenly stop working. Your car tyres will go mysteriously flat. You will suffer permanent hairloss. Your dreams will be filled with terrifying monsters. And in any case I reserve the right to record and publish your IP address.
