I'm always the last to know
"we are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you any different"
So i just found out -- a month after the fact -- that kurt vonnegut died. If you haven't read any of his books, please do. Start with Slaughterhouse five. It's a short read, worthy of a very long read. Buy it. Pay full price if you have to. It's the best novel of the twentieth century. I've read a lot of other contenders, but Slaughterhouse five is a very long way in front. If you like that then read Cat's Cradle too. If you like that then read God Bless You Mr Rosewater. On the other hand, If you like slaughterhouse five but hate cat's cradle then read 'time's arrow' by martin amis. If you like slaughterhouse five but hate cat's cradle and hate time's arrow by Martin Amis then read Catch 22 by Jospeh Heller. If you're still not happy, then just read Slaughterhouse Five again. And again. Next time someone mentions a war somewhere I'm going to say "Did Kurt Vonnegut die for nothing?" And no, it's not going to make much sense, but I think I'll say it anyway.
miss you already.

so it goes.

'engtech' on Sat, 12 May 2007 19:23:36 GMT, sez: It was a weird coincidence, I was in a used book store buying Cat's Cradle and God Bless You Mr Rosewater to read on a flight at almost exactly the time it happened.
'Skronk' on Sun, 13 May 2007 03:37:39 GMT, sez: I read Slaughterhouse Five when I was eighteen.
Reading it lifted me out of a nasty bout of depression. Yes. But it made me very crazy for a long time. So it goes.
'Doekman' on Sun, 13 May 2007 07:02:16 GMT, sez: The Sirenes of Titan is also very good. Unless you can't handle the a bit "dated" Sci-Fi part.
'Farmer Jeb' on Sun, 13 May 2007 23:52:43 GMT, sez: I didn't know he died! He's my favourite author. Player Piano introduced the idea of a "technocratic society". I was an undergraduate engineering student at the time I read it and thought that would be great - geeks running the world. After 12 years in the IT industry I know now that the idea is in fact utterly terrifying.
'Kyralessa' on Tue, 15 May 2007 02:02:57 GMT, sez: Welcome to the Monkey House.
For some reason, Vonnegut's short stories always get overlooked. There are some great ones in Welcome to the Monkey House.
'Pablo' on Tue, 15 May 2007 07:26:03 GMT, sez: At times like this, I am reminded of Alexei Sayle's lament that talented people die while the mediocre survive.
"... Bill Hicks, John Lennon, Orson Welles - dead. Michael Bolton... Michael bleeding Bolton - alive..."
Kurt Vonnegut - dead. Jeffrey Archer - alive.
'Broschat' on Thu, 17 May 2007 14:47:48 GMT, sez: I'm going to recommend that you listen to Ethan Hawke read Slaughterhouse Five, if you have the opportunity. 5-6 CD set, if I recall correctly.
