Choosing between Apple, Microsoft and Linux

Maybe choosing between Apple, Microsoft and Linux is like choosing whether to side with Hitler, Mussolini or Stalin.

Discuss.

(This is just a thought game. Don't take it serious ;-))

I, for one, welcome our new Operating System overlords.

(Sorry.)

Is Godwin's Law satisfied if the very topic of discussion involves a comparison to Hitler?

stalin stallman...where's the beef?

'David Dossot' on Thu, 07 Jun 2007 13:56:16 GMT, sez:

I have been working (software development, image and text processing...) with the three tyrants: my order of preference is Stalin, Mussolini and Hitler.

I'm not sure the analogy fits. Linux, Microsoft and Apple have core philosophical differences. With Microsoft, the OS should provide all services, with Linux, the OS should provide the absolute minimum number of services (and even those can be overridden), with Apple you get a mix of both. I think it’s more like being forced to choose between communist china, Liberia, and a banana republic.

Ahhh but you neglected Google - rather Tojo. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hideki_Tojo). Tojo may not have been in the European Theater but he was a key world player and had his fair share of crimes against humanity.

Google is becoming quite the formidable platform...

And with the new VMWare for Mac OSX, you can have all three evils on your computer at once!

'John Radke' on Thu, 07 Jun 2007 19:06:31 GMT, sez:

I'd say the whole thing is a false trichomoty. It is possible to own a single computer which runs all three operating systems.

Why do I have to choose only one?

Calling such arguments "religious wars" is not a metaphor.

'Picacodigos' on Thu, 07 Jun 2007 19:55:06 GMT, sez:

Make Mine Mussolini!! (sorry, Stan Lee)

'Scott Hanselman' on Thu, 07 Jun 2007 20:00:46 GMT, sez:

A kinder, gentler, Third Reich...

'Nicholas Hebb' on Fri, 08 Jun 2007 19:07:31 GMT, sez:

Wait a minute... if you're running all three in VMWare, wouldn't that be a Decepticon?

'Sensei Loco' on Mon, 11 Jun 2007 20:23:05 GMT, sez:

Nah, if you're running all three you're aiding the AXIS OF EVIL!!
(OK so the metaphor doesn't quite work...never really did, right?)

'Rhynri' on Wed, 13 Jun 2007 21:24:50 GMT, sez:

@ John Redke - maybe it is possible to own a computer that runs all three, but not the pc of your choice (i.e. anything but an apple pc) can LEGALLY run all three native.
