Joe Celko, Bill of Materials, hierarchical nested trees, data explosion...
Are any of these words ringing any bells? Could someone please prepare some sort of injection device that can put all of this knowledge into my brain without hurting me too much. I am trying to use conventional reading materials, but the impedence mismatch is too great and my eyes are burning. On the plus side this is one of the most fun things I've dealt with in years.

Are we expected to have any idea WTF you're talking about?
'secretGeek' on Tue, 01 Nov 2005 21:41:51 GMT, sez: generally yes, today no.
'Steve Hiner' on Thu, 03 Nov 2005 18:40:58 GMT, sez: I know exactly what you're talking about. I got into Celko a while back. Never got his book but I did play with this nested sets stuff a fair bit.
I ended up not using it because I was adding way too much data to the sets. His sets seem to work better with relatively static data. There's just too much re-jiggering of the data for it to work on a system that deals with 8000-12000 new records every day like my mutual fund trade sorting platform did.
I never did benchmark it though - maybe it would work OK in SQL Server. I moved away from it because adding a new record could easily involved changing data in thousands of other records.
However, that being said, maybe your needs are far enough different from mine that it's perfect for you.
Feel free to email me at my gmail account (just my name without spaces) and I'll help you in any way I can. I'm quite facinated by Celko's stuff - he really is a SQL wizard.
